This list is not exhaustive of all resources available on campus or in our community related to experiences and impact of gender-based violence and harassment. Campus Resources
Accommodations (Disability, Pregnancy, and Religious)
The Equal Opportunity and Compliance (EOC) assists the University community with disability, pregnancy and religious accommodation requests for students and employees.
Basic Needs
Basic needs refers to the essential goods, utilities, services, or resources required on a regular basis that are needed to achieve and maintain physical and mental well-being. At the core, these include food security, housing security, and financial stability. We believe that this is a holistic approach and may include health/medical care, technology, mental health resources, and other needs.
All Carolina Community members including undergraduate, graduate, international and undocumented students are eligible for Basic Needs resources and services.

Campus Ready Safety App
The Carolina Ready Safety App includes information about resources, emergency alerts, an in-app feature to report tips to UNC Police, and other features including mobile blue light, Friend Walk, and WorkAlone.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)*
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers brief individual therapy to students seeking support for issues that are relatively well defined and which can be adequately addressed or resolved in a brief time frame. CAPS also offers group therapy, medication management, referrals to outside providers, and a variety of other resources. Employee Assistance Program (EAP)*
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential counseling and resource program that is designed to help University employees and their families deal with both personal and work-related concerns. Trained counselors are available by phone 24/7 through the University’s EAP offered by GuidanceResources.
All permanent employees and their dependents are eligible. The benefit is also available to former employees for up to six months after leaving the University. The EAP is a free service to eligible employees.
Equal Opportunity and Compliance (EOC)
The Equal Opportunity and Compliance (EOC) Office is the University’s central office for addressing issues related to experiences of discrimination and harassment based on protected status. This includes experiences of gender-based violence and harassment including sexual violence, interpersonal violence, stalking, and sexual and gender-based harassment.

The Gender Violence Services Coordinators can help individuals connect with the EOC Office and accompany them to any meetings with the EOC.
Group Therapy
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) currently offers two support groups related to the impact of sexual assault: Courage to Heal - A Sexual Assault Recovery Group and EMERGE - A BIPOC Sexual Violence Support Group.
Individuals interested in joining will meet with the facilitator(s) for a brief screening prior to attending the group. You do not need to share details of your experience during the screening process or group. More information about current group offerings and sign-ups can be found on the CAPS website.
Healthy Relationships Online Workshop
The LGBTQ Center and Student Wellness developed a free online course that centers the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals (though the information is applicable to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.)
The course focuses on characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, awareness of the characteristics you desire in relationships or partners, conflict resolution skills, and awareness about interpersonal violence, bystander intervention, and allyship.
Heels Care Network
The Heels Care Network website is the University’s main website for resources and information about mental health awareness and support available on campus and in the community.
It includes information about immediate help available, mental health resources, trainings, student peer support, suicide prevention, and how to make care referrals if you are concerned about a campus community member’s health or behavior.
Post-Assault Medical Care (including Evidence Collection)*
Campus Health and the UNC Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program offer a variety of options for services for individuals after a sexual assault. Individuals may choose no services, treatment without exam, or treatment and exam. Any student who is eligible for health care services at Campus Health may be seen for sexual assault services.
Through the Survivors Assistance Fund, financial assistance may be available to help offset medical and mental health expenses incurred by individuals impacted by sexual assault.
Campus Health offers a variety of services for post-assault medical care, and individuals may choose which kinds of care and services they receive.
Options and services include:
- Testing and screenings
- Medication prescriptions for the prevention of infections and pregnancy
- Coordination of services within Campus Health, Counseling and Psychological Services, and/or the community
- Immediate referral and coordination with the SANE program at UNC Hospitals for evidence collection
Whichever options an individual requests , even if that's no treatment, Campus Health will provide information about services available and recommend two follow-up appointments, one within a few days and one within a few weeks.
UNC Hospital has staff trained as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) available 24/7 through the Emergency Department. To review your options for care with a Campus Health provider, call 919-966-6577 to speak to a member of the Gynecology clinic team. Hours for Gynecology are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. M-F. Campus Health staff can help coordinate an immediate referral for forensic evidence collection.
For after-hours care, individuals may:
- Call Campus Health at 919-966-2281 and speak with UNC Nurse Connect and on-call providers to review options for care
- Go to UNC Hospital's Emergency Department at 101 Manning Drive. Individuals who receive care at the Emergency Department may receive follow-up care at Campus Health.
Evidence Collection
Individuals interested in evidence collection are referred to the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) program at UNC Hospitals. Campus Health does not provide SANE services but will assist with referral and coordination. If a student identifies to the SANE nurse that they are a UNC-Chapel Hill student, they can be connected to funding available through our campus Survivor’s Assistance Fund.

The Safe At UNC website is the University’s main website for resources and information about discrimination, harassment, sexual violence, interpersonal violence, and stalking.
It includes information about support and services available on campus and in the community, reporting options, policy information, emergency support, how to support individuals impacted by gender-based violence and harassment, and information about awareness, education, and prevention efforts.
SafeWalk
SafeWalk is a student-run, university-sponsored organization whose mission is to provide safe travel alternatives for UNC-Chapel Hill students at night. If requested, a pair of trained students employed by UNC Police will walk with you to your desired destination.

Self-Defense Classes
UNC Police offers a self-defense class through the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program.
The program is open to students, faculty, and staff. There are three programs: RAD for Women, RAD for Men, and RAD Express. Transgender and non-binary individuals are welcome to choose whichever program is most comfortable for them.
Sexual Health and Relationship Education (SHARE)
Sexual Health and Relationship Education (SHARE) increases awareness about sexual health on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus, guides students to existing health resources, and creates safe and non-judgmental spaces for students to talk about a full continuum of health behaviors and choices. SHARE is a service offered through Student Wellness.
SHARE offers individual counseling and sexual health education for larger groups.
Survivor's Assistance Fund
Through the Survivors Assistance Fund, financial assistance may be available to help offset medical and mental health expenses incurred by individuals impacted by sexual assault. This fund covers medical procedures/treatments, medication prescribed including HIV prophylaxis, mental health services and specialty services if indicated. UNC Police (Campus Law Enforcement Option for Reporting)*
UNC Police is the University’s law enforcement option for reporting experiences of gender-based violence and harassment including sexual violence, interpersonal violence, stalking, and sexual and gender-based harassment.

The Gender Violence Services Coordinators can help individuals connect with UNC Police and accompany them to any meetings with UNC Police.
University Approved Absence Office (UAAO)
The University Approved Absence Office (UAAO) can issue approved absences authorized by several offices on campus including the Gender Violence Services Coordinators (GVSCs).
If you are seeking approved absences related to experiences or impact of gender-based violence and/or harassment, you may email the Gender Violence Services Coordinators or complete the UAAO’s request form. Please note that staff in the University Approved Absence Office are Responsible Employees and will need to share disclosed information related to gender-based violence and/or harassment with the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office. Community Resources
Chapel Hill Crisis Unit*
The Chapel Hill Crisis Unit is a 24-hour co-response team that provides onsite emergency response with police officers to persons in crisis situations including intimate partner violence, sexual violence, stalking or harassment, and victims of crime.
The Crisis Unit’s operating hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 11 p.m., except for major holidays. To speak with a Crisis Counselor, you may call the Crisis Unit at 919-968-2806.
Compass Center*
The Compass Center provides free, confidential support and advocacy 24/7 via phone for individuals residing in Orange County who have experienced domestic violence.
The Compass Center also offers education and outreach programs, therapy services, emergency shelter placement, support groups, self-sufficiency services, legal services, safety planning, and accompaniment.
The Compass Center can also help individuals apply for protective orders through the court system.
Local Law Enforcement*
You can dial 911 to be connected to your local law enforcement agency. If you would like to report to law enforcement, the jurisdiction is based on where an incident occurred.
Orange County Rape Crisis Center*
Orange County Rape Crisis Center (OCRCC) provides free, confidential support and advocacy 24/7 via phone, text, and online chat for individuals residing in Orange County who have experienced sexual violence.
OCRCC also offers education and outreach programs, therapy services, support groups, safety planning, advocacy services, and accompaniment.
Orange County Sheriff's Office Crisis Unit
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Unit works to aid and assist victims of crime in Orange County.
Victim Crisis Services can provide a variety of advocacy services and help individuals apply for protective orders through the court system.
They are available Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
