We welcome group requests for outreach, education, and trainings from students groups, teams, or organizations. To schedule a group training, please use our training request form. A “group” can be as formal as a student organization or team, or as informal as a group of friends, classmates, or people who live in the same residence hall. We also offer open call dates for some trainings, when students can register on their own.
Please note: Graduate and professional students are welcome to register for the student or employee versions of our trainings, depending on which feels most aligned and appropriate for their role(s) on campus.
Be That Tar Heel
Inspired by UNC’s It Takes All Heels campaign, this training provides a high-level overview of violence prevention topics and the role each of us plays in fostering a safer, more supportive Carolina. The training is facilitated by staff from Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services (VPAS) and Carolina Behavioral Assessment and Management (CBAM).
Be That Tar Heel offers a broad introduction to recognizing and responding to behaviors that may signal harm—including harassment, sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, and stalking. This training equips students to learn how to identify early signs of concern, explore practical strategies for safe intervention, and gain tools for creating and discussing safety plans. It also provides a brief overview of campus and community resources, along with ways to support friends or peers who may be impacted.
Campus Life Experience (CLE) credit is available for undergraduate students.
training format
This is a 1-hour training facilitated live, in-person or virtually.
Choose Your Action
Choose Your Action (CYA) is an interactive program that puts you in the driver’s seat of real-life decisions faced by students and leaders. Through scenarios and discussion, you’ll explore how leadership, risk-taking, and everyday choices shape the kind of community we create at Carolina and in our groups, teams, and organizations. The program encourages you to be engaged, look out for one another, and practice being an active bystander—because how you lead, respond, and support others matters.
Campus Life Experience (CLE) credit is available for undergraduate students.
training format
This is a 1.5 hour training facilitated live, in-person.
Empower UNC: Responding to Disclosures
Empower UNC equips students with information, resources, and strategies to respond to disclosures of harassment, sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, and stalking in an informed and compassionate way.
Empower UNC: Responding to Disclosures is a training collaboration between Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services (VPAS) and the University Compliance Office (UCO). This updated training replaced UNC’s former HAVEN training.
Campus Life Experience (CLE) credit is available for undergraduate students.
training format
The training consists of two parts. The first part is a 30-minute online video that students will receive upon registration and may complete asynchronously at their convenience. The second part is a 2.5 hour in-person, live training session facilitated by staff from VPAS and UCO.
After completing part two of the live, in-person training, students will receive an Empower UNC placard and sticker. If you choose, you may display these to acknowledge your training completion and signal your commitment to supporting individuals affected by harassment, sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, and stalking in our campus community.
